VIGNERONS
SOFIA ELENA
Sofía began working as the Vineyard Manager and Oenologist for Bodega Contra Corriente in October 2018, after ten years of gathering experience in winemaking and working in predominantly cold climate region vineyards. She had previously worked in Oregon, Burgundy, New Zealand and Chile, and went back to Argentina in the hopes of working on wines with similar characteristics: wines that show the coolness and sense of their terroir. Sofía firmly believes that the wines she helps produce in Trevelin have a highly promising future.
The Contra Corriente vineyard is one of the few pioneering projects in Trevelin, and grows three different varieties: Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Most of the vineyard was planted in 2015, after failing a first time due to frequent frosting. So far there are four planted hectares and they have only had five harvests; performance is usually low since local climate conditions make for extremely challenging winemaking conditions. Trevelin wines have contributed to diversify Argentina's wine scene by offering low-alcohol wines that are very cool and aromatic, with a vibrant and pleasant natural acidity.
